Summer is just round the corner

Summer is just round the corner and we have organized another action packed series of events for the 2012 season at WWWC.

The club opens on 1st march when sunrise is at 6.45am and sunset is at 5.41pm –that’s nearly 11 hours of daylight in the day, ie plenty of time to get your kit out of your garage, find your WWWC bibs, perhaps buy some new kit, fill your freezer with bbq produce, and join us on the beach for what we hope will be the best season yet!

Firstly here are some DATES for your diary:
• Thursday 1st March: Start of 2012 season
– full time rescue starts.
• Sunday 8th April (11am): The Easter Egg Hunt
– come down with the kids and join in the fun!
• Saturday 30th June (6pm): Club BBQ
– bring your food to cook, we supply the drinks
• Saturday 28th July (6pm): Club BBQ
– bring your food to cook, we supply the drinks
• Sunday 29th July (11.30am): Charity paddle race
- from Shore Road to West Wittering (race starts 1pm)
• Saturday 25th August (6pm): Club BBQ
– bring your food to cook, we supply the drinks
• Saturday 6th October (6.30pm): End of Season Dinner
– Crouchers Country Hotel

Secondly have a read of the new x-train brochure and the new wwwc brochure.
And thirdly, spaces on the 2012 courses are filling up fast, so make sure you book up as soon as possible.

Did you miss out last year on learning a new sport? If so, then ‘seize the day’ and make sure you book into a beginner course for windsurfing, kitesurfing, powerkiting, surfing or paddlesurfing.

Or have you hit a plateau in your skills base? It is easy to go out on the water and to cruise around in your comfort zone, however it can be difficult to push yourself to learn new things.
In each watersports discipline you can book into any of the following levels of tuition:

Action from West Wittering Beach - December 2011

Managed to get some photos of yesterday - there has been a lot of hard charging going on at West Wittering - the weather and temperature has dropped and for the last couple of weeks there has been a relentless pounding, decent waves and strong winds....

The forecast for the last couple of days has been pretty large with expected winds that didn’t quite arrive of up to 80mph.

Good to see so many people braving the winter conditions - seem to have seen Jamie Barrett, Kyle McGinn nearly every time the wind is up; managed to catch yesterday Paul Simmons, Paul Hatton, missed Innes because he was having a big swim bringing his kit in...

Didn’t manage to get photos of Ross and Paddy as they had packed up as I arrived - hope you like the photos!

Grr Easy Tiger... The NEW Ezzy Tiger is in da house!

We have just taken delivery of the New 2012 Ezzy tiger in the 2XS office grrrrrrr.

This sail we haven't tried yet is a very similar concept to the EZZY Panther Ltd but comes with standard sail cloth opposed to the custom sail cloth of the Panther LTD. I have a 4.7 were going to test next time its windy.

I had an email form the master himself Dave Ezzy who said “the Tiger has very close to the same performance as the Panther Limited. The Tiger might be a smidge more powerful and a tad more draft forward. The weights are similar, with the Tiger coming in only a few grams heavier than the Limited."

If you not tried the panther LTD there is big reduction in weight of previous sails and it feels very light in your hands –what I like is the early planning you get from the new EZZYs without sacrificing any top end power. One thing is for sure the quality of these sails is by far the best in the industry.

Sneak a peek at Surftech 2012 products

We had chance to try and check the 2012 paddle surf boards from Surftech. We had a damp day to test some of the new sticks which included a new set of distance and race boards from Jamie Mitchell and New Laird Hamilton boards designed with Joe Bark. Surftech already have reputation for making some of the lightest distance race and paddlesurf models on the market the 2012 line does not disappoint. The new elite race boards felt very light carbon bottoms and tufflite tops seem spot on in the weight department-they also are making a tufflite only cheaper model of certain distance boards which does feel heavier than the elite boards but are acceptable – if you want top performance buy the elite model!

Surftech Roxy - 10.6 = £1145 and 9.6 = £1145

We didn't have any girlie's to try these so we thought we would try them ourselves – I really like the feel of these, and they felt very similar to the Pearson Arrow lairds –they are really stable easy to paddle and rode waves with great ease and were surprisingly loose. What was good was the fact the board tracked pretty well – but still rode small waves with great ease. They have a decent surfboard style rail line handle which was well placed and boards were light weight and easy to carry. 10.6 x 32.25 x 4.3 - 9.6 x 30 x 4.33

Jamie Mitchell Latitude 12.6 £1495 And 14ft £1695.00

The Jamie Mitchell models look very different this season – gone is the drawn out pin tail and now there is a high volume squash tail. The boards are super fast and feel more stable than the 12.6 of 2010 – we tried them in choppy windy conditions so it was not the most perfect test conditions. What you notice straight away is their weight - they are super light – the high volume tails give you the chance to get more pop when you paddle. As you compress into your paddle stroke as the paddle is forced down in the water – the shape and high volume tail is forced down into the water as the paddle gets released, the board rises out of the water and with forward momentum picks up speed. All sounds very technical but you do it nearly all the time on a sup with good paddle technique-the Mitchell tail shape improves this. The 14 ft is narrower than the 12.6 and once a cruising speed with hold that speed with a little less effort.

The Laird Race Tufflite 14 ft £1445

This is big volume board 275 ltrs 14 x 29.5 width 7.5 inches thick will suit big guys and we felt this board would make a great downwinder –super fast downwind has good footstearing and the vee bow drives through chop.We had a swept back fin on the test board so it was harder driving up into the wind I think a more upright fin would work better into the wind.The Elite model will cost £1595 –personally I spend the extra and get the lighter board. This board has been a collaboration between Joe Bark and Laird Hamilton so you know its going to be good. There is 12.6 model x 30" and 7.75 inches thick 259 ltrs. This has a different shape more of a squash tail –feels very stable a similar concept to the bark competitor and is a great all rounder in different conditions. Volume has been reduced in front of the foot pad to reduce windage. They come in both pro elite construction £1395 and tufflite £1345.

Bark

Bark is legend in the paddleboard world his distance race and prone boards have brought him many titles –in the USA bark is king of many of the race comps and his production boards are result of a lot of R and D. We had the new competitor 12.6 and dominator 14 ft which have had a tune up with lower deck profiles forward of the pads. We also saw the Candice Applebee model in blue which we didn't get chance to try.12.6 competitor elite £1545 (Candice Applebee model same as 12.6 competitor) dominator elite £1745. The boards are still as fast as last years so always a very good option.

The cult of RRD equipment at West Wittering

Earlier this year the European Championships were help in St. Gilles Croix de Vie, Vendee, France. RRD team rider Sebastian Garat was crowned king for winning the final stop. There were seven days of spectacular competitions, varying wind conditions and beautiful waves at the beach. Garat and Kerneur were crowned European Champions.
RRD Team rider Sebastians favourite gear is the RRD Obsession MKIV and Poison LTD 133/41!!!

Dan Sweeney has recently taken on the role of RRD UK Team manager at Seasprite. His job role includes working alongside the company developing and building the team, visiting shops educating staff and customers on the product . Dan's equipment choices are the Obsession Pro and the Juice Twintip

Stuart Holland is a face that is frequently seen when ever the wind tips the magic 18 knot mark. He rides the 2012 RRD Obsessions and also the 2012 Maquina Surf board

Product Review by Stu Holland "I purchased the new RRD Obsession kites, 9 and 7m about a month ago and have now had some fantastic kite sessions with them. Although I usually kite in the waves, and always use a directional board, I have tended to prefer these ‘all-round’ kites like the Obsession, as I’ve found they have a bit more grunt and range than the waves specific kites. This makes them better suited to the South Coast type conditions. The 9m has seen the biggest improvement from last year, with much better unhooked capability whilst wave riding. Overall they are great all round kites- easy to fly, giving you versatility and a big wind-range".

Neal Gent, the all round Witterings waterman loves his RRD 2012 Religions and also his brand new RRD Asso Pigliatutto

Chris Rainbow's new ride is the super stylish RRD Style Twintip and twinned with the RRD Religion it makes for an epic riding combo.

Julia Toms has also been an RRD fan since the beginning of her kiteboarding life when she started on the RRD type 6! She now rides an RRD Obsession on a custom surf board.

There also a whole flock of RRD Passions to be seen on the beach. Jess Napper has been converted to kitesurfing from windsurfing and it was the RRD Passion that led her down the kiting router. She is frequently seen at the beach and also rides RRD Twintips boards.

Rippers Camp round up

The last weekend in October we had our Rippers Freestyle Wave Camp, hosted at West Wittering Windsurfing Club with Sam Ross and Rossco Moore.

The weekend kicked off early Saturday morning and the concept is a mixture of fitness, freestyle technique and wave sailing technique. Sam Ross who is one of the most energetic instructors in the UK delivered the course with Rossco from X-train.

The group was warmed up then did dry land drills and then spent the rest of the time out on the water as the wind picked up and the tide changed developing new skills to take their windsurfing to the next level.

On the second day of the course, Julian Du Vall and Trevor Funnell from the UKWA came over and explained how Freestyle Comps worked, judging, about starts and competition zones and held a “mini comp” on Sunday afternoon in pretty light and difficult conditions.

Jamie Drummond, Adam Sims were on hand over the weekend inspiring the new crew with reasons why you should take up windsurfing to a higher level. James Randall also helped with the judging at the mini event.

A big thanks to Chris Rainbow, James Randall, Rossco Moore, Sam Ross, Trevor Funnell and Julian Du Vall; also thanks to Ion, Seasprite and 2XS who gave us some goodies to hand out.

NEW Ezzy 2012 Cheetah & Tiger Sails

The Panther Ltd has been very well received with its new improved power range an- lighter handling and unique custom graphics.
The Ezzy Tiger has graphics and panel layout and new striking colours -see the pic of of Kevin Prichard smashing the lip at Hookipa Maui Hawaii.

The new Cheetah which is the replacement for the Ezzy Freeride. What you will get with the new sails is a reduction in overall sail weight as well as softer, lighter feel in your hands on the water without compromising the unusual strong and light wind performance you get from Ezzy sails.

We will be getting more details but this is all we have so far .

BSUPA National Champianships at Watergate Bay 2011

Holly, myself, Jane, Daisy and Matt Argyle piled in the van and and drove down to BSUPA National championships at Watergate bay at last weekend.

Neil was already down there with Scott, and the forecast looked pretty amazing for the weekend - sunshine, light offshore winds, and a 2 to 4 foot forecast.

50 competitors were divided up into heats of 4 or 5 and each had 15 minutes to cut some shapes on the wave face. A panel of 3 judges would then score each wave ridden with a max of 2 best waves to get maximum points.

All the top seeds were put across the the first round heats and the double reportage format meant the losers in each heat would get another chance.

I managed to get third place in my first heat against the junior champ Aaran Knowles and Adam Zervas but got 4th place in my second round - so that was it for me. I quickly realized how different you have to ride and how much you have to up your game when your in a comp.

Holly was in two rounds of the ladies and was the first placed Junior girls under 16.

Neal lost his first round and battled back through nearly two hours of heats and rode really hard to get 4th place overall in a close run final.

Matt got knocked out in the semis but clawed back a great result in Expression session on Sunday with 4th place. (We all used Nah-Skwell surf series 8'8/9'3 and Kialoa Methane paddles - we also had the new 8.10 Fanatic Pro wave for weekend to test.)

I have to say we all had great weekend riding some very decent waves and the atmosphere down at Watergate Bay was awesome. Holly manned up lots and got into some decent waves and we will definitely be back there for 2012.

Rippers Freestyle Wave Camp 29th 30th October 2011 at West Wittering Beach

We are running a Rippers Freestyle wave camp 29th-30th October at West Wittering beach.

It is designed for young guns who can plane on their short boards and waterstart who are looking to develop skills to take them to next level.

The course will be full-on and fun for the 2 days with early starts and will incorporate:

-developing new manoeuvres

-learning about competing in wave and freestyle

-fitness-mental focus

-kit tuning

-technique and a mini comp on the second day.

There will be a push to try new manoeuvres and develop the next techniques and drills to take your windsurfing forward. We hope to inspire the next level of freestyle wave sailors.

We will be having some guest stars inc Jamie Drummond, Adam Simms and others to turn up during the weekend to chat about there competition experience and give some advice. Sam Ross (PWA freestyle judge top freestyle sailor and RYA coach) will taking the rippers course, along with X-train Team Chris Rainbow, Roscoe Moore ,Simon Bassett.

There will be still photos and video analysis. If there is a shortage of wind we will concentrate on developing light wind skills-fitness and SUP and equipment tuning. Saturday

Windy Freestyle Session at West Wittering Beach

We have had some pretty decent sessions this season. And last Monday was another epic day at West Wittering with decent waves at high tide and great flat water conditions in the Wittering trench.

The freestyle boys turned up fresh from Windfest at Poole - Chris Muzza Murray, Sam Ross, Max Rowe, John from the beach, Jamie Drummond, and John Palmer were all out ripping on the trench. People on the beach stood by the lagoon watching the new school freestyle action. Max Rowe said on the beach that he had one of best freestyle sessions of the year due the super strong winds and flat water.

Dave White (editor of boards mag and production speed record holder) and his son Reece was also out ripping at high and low tide. Dave also went sailing with Holly after she got back from school where she undertook her first mission above 35 knots!

Nik Baker turned up at high tide and brought with him the new Fanatic 2012 Quad and North Hero for a test drive (we will feature more about the gear test later).

Loads of people from the club were in on the action: Levon on his 5m kite, Paul Simmons, Inness, Jonny Boyce, Roul, Kev, John and Ru Hamer. Chris Rosco and Grahme P hit the late low tide and had themselves a good wave session.

Last Thursday summer arrived with a small swell between the windy fronts that have been battering the beach for the last few months. It was super smooth waves on Berties reef at West Wittering, downwind of the windsurf club.

West Wittering felt like Malibu really warm nice waves no wind a perfect Sup session plenty of folks riding long boards.

Day of Watersports Joy - West Wittering Beach

Some days it is great just being on the water. And sunday was just one of those fine days. It wasn’t just good, it was EPIC! People were out on the water from early doors all way through the tide until the last ounch of low tide. There were some decent chunks at high tide and at low tide the lagoon was like a flat-water speed track.

Loads of people were out and it was great to see how many kids on the water. Justin’s crowd, Jack and Jenna, James and Alex ripping up at high tide, Holly the Bassett was out at mid tide getting some top tips from ex British champ Julian Anderson. Jules managed to clock 35 knots on his wave board yesterday!!!

There was plenty of kite action going on with Stu ripping some holes in the surf – Pete Swan had so much action he couldn’t take any more....

A big thanks to Innes for rescuing Rob Langley who was about to have a long swim - Rosco had to launch the Jet Ski to pull in a drowned kiter.

National Windsurfing Festival at Hayling Island 2011

NATIONAL WINSURFING FESTIVAL - Hayling Island

The NWF at Hayling Island saw a good crew from the windsurf club in action. As usual the reports from the event were excellent - organised by Allan Cross who has really put this event on the map for windsurfing each September.

The Goodwin's, Petits, James Arnell Smith, and Julian Anderson all were involved in the racing over two days. This also included a night event and party.

In the under Turbo 15s class 1ts place was overall by Emily Goodwin, 2nd Jack Petit, 4th James Arnell Smith, Graeme came 14th in the free ride fleet, and Julian Anderson came 12 in the pro fleet.

Part of the night time event was a relay with a pro –James was with John Skye, Jack with Ben Profit and Emily with Saskia - Jack won the event with Ben and I think everyone had a great time.
Rohan Goodwin came in 4th in the free ride fleet and Francis was fully on it in the mosh pit until closing time at the party.

Roberto visits Wittering to demo the 2012 RRD gear

Had chance to meet up with Roberto at the Seasprite warehouse to check out the new toys and look at the new RRD freestyle waves - New 100 ltr contest - New RRD religion - New RRD kite wave boards and the new -carbon autoclave 10 knot light wind twin tip.

Roberto also showed us the new SUPER Sup and talked through the new design concepts of all the gear. I will be testing out some of the new freestyle waves 2012 editions - Neal will be getting the new 2012 religions and James on the beach will have the new Obsession Pro on test later next week.

The RRD team dropped down to the beach last Friday to show off the new gear before heading off to the National Windsurf Festival at Hayling Island.
Neal, John Skye, Rosco, Chris, Jem, and Roberto all came to WWWC to before the wind arrived to bring some new RRD toys down to the test centre.

We are very pleased to announce that Roberto Ricci will coming to the UK and will be visiting 2XS and X-train - he will be launching 2012 new RRD product at WWWC -West Wittering - the RRD EZZY test centre.

Roberto will have the new 2012 RRD Freestyle Waves, Contest Quad Wave, The New RRD SUP and the new 2012 RRD Kites The Religion 2 - The new Obsession Pro and Obsession MKIV - RRD kite wave boards - the new 10 Knots LTD.

Roberto will be on hand to answer any questions and will introduce the new RRD toys.

Neal Gent RRD 2XS team rider- Chris Rainbow, Rossco Moore, James Crowe from 2XS and X-Train will be on hand to help with any enquiries.

The ISAF Team Try Kitesurfing At West Wittering Windsurf Club

We were really pleased to host The British Kitesurf Association with the team from ISAF for kitesurfing lessons.

ISAF, based in Southampton, are the International Sailing Federation (the FIFA of sailing world) who have taken on Kitesurfing as the extreme end of sailing and looking worldwide to organise world class events and possibly add kitesurfing as a class in the Olmypics. This is a big deal for kitesurfing
as a sport and we were very pleased they chose X-train and West Wittering as a location.

Kitesurfing originally became a class of ISAF in order to claim the sailing world speed record in 2008. This record was then increased again by Rob Douglas in 2010 (56.65 knots)

We had a cracking team on hand for the coaching, including Kirsten Borse (4 times world kitesurfing champion), Ellie and Myles from Easy Riders in Poole and James Crowe from X-Train West Wittering.

Richard Gowers, the chairman of the BKSA was also on had not help. He commented “It’s great to see the ISAF team trying kitesurfing – we want them to understand the kitesurf experience and enjoy it!”

Tamsin, Q, Al, Dan and Clive were put through their paces with an initial power-kite session in the field at West Wittering beach and then straight out into the shallow, tidal lagoon for some body dragging sessions. The wind was light – about 10 to 15 knots and there was plenty of flat water. The conditions gave every chance of progress to board skills, edging and getting up for the first time to get the real kitesurfing experience.

The second day was not so windy. Everyone had a SUP session in the morning, followed by a second kitesurfing session in the afternoon.

Cabrinha 2012 Kites and Kiteboards

Here is a sneak preview of all of the 2012 Cabrinha kite and kiteboard gear. New boards, new kites and new kite bars.

Cabrinha have a very nice looking set of new graphics for 2012 and a couple of new models called the Vector and Drifter. The Vector is a surf and freeride kite and the Drifter is a pure surf orientated kite. Both of the kites are 3-strut designs.

The Nomad, Crossbow and Switchblade have all been retuned this year. All are lighter in feel for 2012 with improved tuning and balance.

They have improved the 2012 Quick Link kitebar too.

They have a new surfboard construction with a cork laminate as opposed to wood:

As you can see, it's pretty strong!

There is a new Freeride board called the Transport - an uber-light-wind twin fin board, based on a detuned raceboard.

Witterings Charity Paddle Race 2011 Results

Surfers Paddle for Charity - Organised by X-Train -2XS and the Shore Surf Club.

Sunday 24th July saw 56 entrants to the Wittering Charity Paddle Race.

Entrants had to paddle against 20 knots of wind from East To West Wittering. The course is just over a mile from East To West Wittering which would normally take (on average) around 20 to 45 mins. However, the windy conditions made it much harder and it took the last competitor just under 2 hours to compete (the fastest time was 24 minutes 39). Even though the conditions were hard, nearly everyone fought on through and there were smiling, happy faces all over the beach at the finish line.

From West Wittering Windsurf Club, it was great to see Oliver Chipperfield and the McKirghans. Emile Kott managed to just squeeze in front of the boss (Simon Bassett) and James Randall managed to beat the old man by a convincing five minutes!

Event Results

The event, which is in its 7th year, brings the surfing community together to raise money for local charities. This year, the charity was The Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

The event raised just over £1000 for the charity and money is still coming in. Everyone involved enjoyed a BBQ at West Wittering Windsurf Club where there was a prize giving at the end of the day.

A lot of people put in a great deal of time to make the event happen, including the Shore Surf Club Team, the WWWC team, Puma Safety, West Wittering Estate Lifeguard.

I am either suffering from amnesia or we have just had so many good days this July that I can't remember which day was which. My hands are calloused, my feet leave skin wherever I go and I look like I've been tangoed.

There isn't much story to this blog-entry, we just have a load of photos that we wanted to upload. There is a selection from Holly and Simon Basset, taken from the beach as well as some pretty decent 'self-love' GoPro shots from Simon and Stuart Holland on his kite-board.

There has been some standout sailing from all the West Wittering regulars this month. Most notably, the kids have been ripping it up - the Goodwins and Pettits are becoming part of the beach furniture and Holly Bassett has been flying around with a new love for the sport. Jess Napper is pretty much a full time kiter (I think she goes to work in her time-off) and is now showing up some of the boys with her skills. Paul Simmons is getting dangerously close to consistent back loops and Justin Goodwin's forwards are looking very stylish.

Francisco Goya's Demo in West Wittering

Francisco Goya headed over to West Wittering Windsurf Club on Saturday 9th July. With the help of Rick from Zero Gravity, he brought a selection of 2011 and 2012 Goya boards and sails for demo.

Francisco and Rick arrived in the early morning and were greeted by warm sunshine and a blissful, summer, 20 knot breeze. It was low tide at West Wittering and the ‘trench’ just inside Chichester Harbour mouth provided some of the best possible demo conditions – 5.3 weather, warm water and hot sunshine!

Francisco Goya has an incredible amount of infectious enthusiasm for the sport and was getting everyone on the water on the new gear, running from sail to sail to make sure that not a single piece of gear went out without him tweaking it to perfection whilst explaining exactly what and why he was doing it.

Francisco headed down to the water to coach the kids from the water’s edge and later mentioned that he couldn’t believe how good the sailing was at West Wittering and how perfect it was for everyone to get out on the water together.

The conditions in West Wittering on days like this are always easy and fun for all – flat water in the lagoons and trench and small waves breaking onto the sandbars for jumping.

The day before, actually made Emile and Rossco's day when they went sailing with Francisco on 4.2s in nice little waves just in front of West Wittering Windsurf Club (unfortunately everyone was having far too much fun to grab a camera!)

Everyone made the most of the Goya demo gear, which included the Goya 2011 Custom Quads, Goya Ones, Goya FXR freeride boards and 2011 and 2012 Eclipse, Guru and Banzai Sails. 2XS have been selling Goya boards for a while now and will be shortly adding the Goya Sail quiver to the website.

The West Wittering Windsurf Club barbecue was fired up for lunch and Francisco, who is normally nearly vegan, was taken in by the smell of Waitrose finest…

It was a truly great day and one of the best demos we have ever seen. The 60 year age range present gave testament to this and more importantly than anything else, everyone had fun!

Mention has to be made of the West Wittering club member Nick De Candole. In his rush to get out on the water with his hero, not only did he forget to lock his van but also to actually turn the engine off… Nice of him to keep the carpark warm for us all…
